Spider-Man is ambushed and apparently killed by Kraven the Hunter, who then assumes the role of Spider-Man in order to prove himself superior to his nemesis。 The true test of this new, more violent Spider-Man comes in the form of a cannibal killer who has been haunting the streets of New York; the creature known as Vermin。This is a truly iconic Spider-Man storyline and, as a result, I was initially intimidated by it。 However, this is a masterfully told story of fear, obsession and humanity that Spider-Man is ambushed and apparently killed by Kraven the Hunter, who then assumes the role of Spider-Man in order to prove himself superior to his nemesis。 The true test of this new, more violent Spider-Man comes in the form of a cannibal killer who has been haunting the streets of New York; the creature known as Vermin。This is a truly iconic Spider-Man storyline and, as a result, I was initially intimidated by it。 However, this is a masterfully told story of fear, obsession and humanity that is both worthy of its place in the Spidey Hall of Fame and is still eminently readable。 This is truly a psychological battle of wills between Spidey and Kraven, a supervillain who I'd never really liked before (I think the 60s story where Kraven shoots beams out of his nipples was too far for me)。 Strangely enough the dark psychological tone of this book actually put me more in mind of a Batman story than a Spider-Man, and this shift in tone for the Webslinger makes for some interesting reading。 It even matches his black costume。 I wouldn't want every Spider-Man story to read like this, but here it's really well done and feels appropriate。This is just a really good, self-contained Spider-Man story。* More reviews here: https://fsfh-book-review2。webnode。com * 。。。more

Much more of a Kraven story than Spider-Man。 Since Kraven the Hunter continually fails when hunting The Spider he is driven mad。 A twisted story。 Lots of internal dialogue。 Great art。

Three and a half stars。It had been a long time since I had read a good Spidey story : )

This comic is very different than what I expected, and in a way is very different from a lot of comics I've read。 I loved the writing and the way they conveyed what each of the characters were thinking - it was very human。This was definitely an excellent comic book and I would 100% recommend it。 I obviously don't want to say too much without ruining it, because I think the surprise of the comic is really vital to the story。 This comic is very different than what I expected, and in a way is very different from a lot of comics I've read。 I loved the writing and the way they conveyed what each of the characters were thinking - it was very human。This was definitely an excellent comic book and I would 100% recommend it。 I obviously don't want to say too much without ruining it, because I think the surprise of the comic is really vital to the story。 。。。more

This lacked everything a Spider Man story should have and was full of dark, depressing, existential crises instead。 Too violent, too dark, too Russian。 This is not MY Spider Man。

How calm I feel; how peaceful。 As if something inside me- some knot, some tangle of fear and anger and so much more, has been finally untied。

I actually pre-ordered this book like a month ago because i heard it was a defining story to Spider-man。 Now i understand why people say that。。

There is something captivating and timeless about the polarity between Peter Parker and Kraven。 Or as the DeMatteis (quoting The Tyger) puts it, fearful symmetry。 The story is really Kraven's story, as he searches for meaning in his two existences。 The duality of his meaningless personal life and his life as a hunter, and the duality of Spider-Mans meaningful personal life, with his tumultuous life as a protector。 Like "The Killing Joke" this story gives us a look into the psyche of a villain, a There is something captivating and timeless about the polarity between Peter Parker and Kraven。 Or as the DeMatteis (quoting The Tyger) puts it, fearful symmetry。 The story is really Kraven's story, as he searches for meaning in his two existences。 The duality of his meaningless personal life and his life as a hunter, and the duality of Spider-Mans meaningful personal life, with his tumultuous life as a protector。 Like "The Killing Joke" this story gives us a look into the psyche of a villain, and how similar that is the hero。 Like a butterfly flapping its wings and causing a hurricane, the villain is removed from the hero by only a very slim morality。 Spider-man fights for a purpose (Honor, love, responsibility)。 Kraven fights for a purpose (to hunt, to be the best)。 The comics title “Fearful Symmetry, fits many of its themes。 He’s Kraven。 Born to a noble Russian family after the collapse of aristocracy。 Obsessed with the old ways。 With the nobility how the civilized world is conversely less civil in his mind。 The world to both Peter and Kraven are beautiful and dreadful。 There are other symmetries explored in the text。 Death and life。 Hero and villain。 Human and beast。Kraven as Spider-Man does the things that Spider-Man does。 He saves Marry Jane and he stops crime。 But his brutal efficiency contrasts vividly with the way Peter performs his duties。 As evidenced early on in the story, Peter has compassion for his enemies and sees the people in them。 In this story, both Peter and Kraven fight Vermin, but the way that they deal with him varies in important ways。 Kraven uses Vermin as a means to an end。 He captures him and uses him as a trophy。 Peter could care less about his reputation of never having defeated Kraven personally, and when he does capture him, he promises to help him。 For me, this was a reminder that honor does exist in the world。 As bleak and grim as this story is, it always remains hopeful。 I love stories like that。 。。。more

Look, it was good。 It was better than average, and for the most part I enjoyed it, hence the 4/5。Did it measure up to the hype of "one of the best Spider-Man stories ever told?"。 No。I do think this would make a really cool R18+ horror spiderman MCU flick though。But of course we would never see that。 Look, it was good。 It was better than average, and for the most part I enjoyed it, hence the 4/5。Did it measure up to the hype of "one of the best Spider-Man stories ever told?"。 No。I do think this would make a really cool R18+ horror spiderman MCU flick though。But of course we would never see that。 。。。more

Wow! I'm not really a fan of superhero comics but that was mindblowing! Sure, there are a few cheesy superhero moments but the work that is put into it overall is incredible, especially the "mise-en-scene" (if it is possible to use this term for comics)。 Wow!

I get why this series is considered a seminal story arc for the Spider-man cannon。 Decidedly dark and emotional, it's less of a story about Spider-man/Peter Parker and more about the Kraven and the meaning of life。 A must read for anyone who loves Spider-man。 I get why this series is considered a seminal story arc for the Spider-man cannon。 Decidedly dark and emotional, it's less of a story about Spider-man/Peter Parker and more about the Kraven and the meaning of life。 A must read for anyone who loves Spider-man。 。。。more

Honestly, fairly overrated story。 It was fine, the art was very good, but the story was overly dramatic。 Off-putting at times。

This was an okayish story and is basically Kraven defeating spidey and burying him and then taking up his identity to prove himself superior to Peter。 Its a very twisted tale and coincides with retelling of his origins and why he must give in to this spider。 There is also a subplot with the Vermin and the way its done is epic and just makes you feel for him and when Kraven captures him but at the same time Peter digs his way out of that is just fascinating。 Then they meet and they fight and Krav This was an okayish story and is basically Kraven defeating spidey and burying him and then taking up his identity to prove himself superior to Peter。 Its a very twisted tale and coincides with retelling of his origins and why he must give in to this spider。 There is also a subplot with the Vermin and the way its done is epic and just makes you feel for him and when Kraven captures him but at the same time Peter digs his way out of that is just fascinating。 Then they meet and they fight and Kraven has the captured Vermin fight Spidey before。。。stopping it and what he does thereafter is just sad but also makes sense and proves why he was a hero in the end but this will affect Spidey and MJ for years but despite that he continues to help people like a hero!! 。。。more

I'd rate this more like a 3。5。 Its a good story but the style it's told can be a little hard to follow with the internal monologues constantly running along with the main dialogue。 The art work is top notch。 It does lean a little hard on symbolism and can get a little too deep for its own good at moments but it mostly ties into a nice package。 I'd rate this more like a 3。5。 Its a good story but the style it's told can be a little hard to follow with the internal monologues constantly running along with the main dialogue。 The art work is top notch。 It does lean a little hard on symbolism and can get a little too deep for its own good at moments but it mostly ties into a nice package。 。。。more
